||Question by queenbeeandthehappydrone: Whats with this Infrared heating system?
I have seen infomercials on one called “Edenpure”. There have been fliers in local papers. Generally any electric heater pluged into a 110 outlet can only produce 5,200 btu’s of heat, so is there something new or is this just another sham.

you are correct in that any electric heater rated at xx watts produces xx watts of heat. The rest is all gimmicks.

There are three ways to transfer heat;
1) Radiation (holding your hand next to a glowing log).
2) Convection (holding your hand in the jet stream over a glowing log).
3) Conduction (holding a glowing log in your hand).

Most homes use convection (heating air & ducting it all over), but convection works against the human animal’s natural method of cooling – which is to create a flow of air evaporating the moisture on your skin. The advantage of radiation is that it delivers heat without kicking in your body’s evaporative cooling.

With this in mind there might be some credit due a radiant heaters – many work spaces (mechanics, airport hangers etc) use radiant tube heaters. I had one in my wood shop in Michigan. As I type this message I am becoming a bit more convinced that they might be more then simply well marketed.

I began typing I was going to say it was just marketing – - but now I am switching horses,… I want you to buy one and let us know how well it works .

This is a marketing scam. I have a detailed analysis here: http://www.nlcpr.com/Deceptions4.html which is too long to paste here.

Radiant heat from a warehouse or patio heater can make sense, but they are extremely intense (as in glowing red hot) and far away from anything combustible. Trying to apply this to an indoor heater that might sit a few inches away from furniture, or have a cat sitting on it, is silly. This is a large, low power heater that performs no better than any other small heater.

You could take any electric resistance heater, put it in a large box, and presto, claim it heats by radiation. In reality, the warm box would be dissipating the vast majority of its heat by convection. If radiation was sensible to human skin at these temperatures, you would be able to feel the heat from other people in the room as they passed by. The phase “she was beaming at me” would take on a new meaning.

I call it a scam because they imply great reductions in heating costs, and cover themselves in the fine print by suggesting you only heat the one room you are in. They also make lots of other silly claims which seem to be a hallmark of most things that are promoted by infomercials.
